White Subway Tile: Classic vs Zellige

One day a few years from now, when Mr. Bookworm and I have rebuilt our savings, we’d love to hire someone to install a subway tile backsplash in our kitchen. Even though this project is likely a good 5+ years away, I love to have a vision in mind. The subway tile images I’ve pinned to Pinterest and saved on Instagram fall into 3 distinct camps. A classic simple subway tile, a zellige tile with a little more color and texture variation, or a shiny white subway tile that has a slightly handmade look like zellige, but is uniform in color. I also go back and forth on the grout color. Here are the tiles I’m considering:

Below are some of my favorite inspiration images that feature subway tile.

Although I’m not really considering the square shape, used in Tom’s kitchen above, it’s a great argument for something simple and classic, and the power of dark grout.
With the white grout above, the kitchen manages to feel warm and inviting, rather than too industrial. This is also an excellent case for the affordable classic subway tile.
Sometimes I wonder if Zellige is too trendy, but the kitchen above couldn’t be more timeless.
Another beautiful case for zellige, above. Timeless or trendy, it definitely catches the eye!
This just might be my favorite of the bunch. I love the timeless uniform white color, but the handmade look of the textured tiles.
These tiles almost look like glass — they’re so beautiful!
