Waking with Nature

^^ April view

In the “Imprints of a New Lifestyle” essay in Small Wonders, Jen writes, “The very first night we spent in our new home, my husband and I put ourselves to bed without drawing the curtains and sat with our backs against the headboard in the pitch black staring out the windows.”

I could have written these words myself. And three years into woodsy suburbia, I am still waking up to open shades every morning. The glow of street lights while drifting off at night is a small price to pay to be greeted with a symphony of green (or white or gold or pink) in the morning sky. No matter what the day has in store for me, there’s something very grounding about nature being the first thing I see.

I am fortunate that my bedroom is situated out of the sightline of nearby houses, tucked up and away in a canopy of trees. It’s my own little way to microdose nature at the start of each day. Waking with the sun (a privilege, to be sure!) is incredibly restorative on the mornings that my schedule allows for it and is something that I try to prioritize as much as I am able. (No pre-dawn workouts for me!)

One of my favorite things about New England is how fully each season is expressed. Here is the view from my pillow throughout the year.
